The review for the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz: First of all, I would just like to say that it was incredible getting to see this film on the big screen. It was also very interesting seeing it in the exact aspect ratio of its original showing. Call me stupid (cause I know a bit about classic movies) but it never occurred to me that movies were not in "wide screen" back in those days. Its just one of those things I had never thought about. Having all of my tvs being widescreen, plus all movies nowadays being wide screen, it was extremely akward at first seeing this huge box on the screen with these skinny looking people. Anyway, as a second point, I would also like to say that this theatre did and INCREDIBLE job at ABSOLUTELY RUINING the experience. For these special screenings, instead of shipping off discs or "films" for you older theatres, they send the movie through satilite and the theatre records it on their DVR. This presentation was supossed to be in HD and all that, but the color was off through the entire thing. The most obvious was when the yellow brick road was more of a green color. Now, its been quite a while since I've watched this movie at home, and it was on vhs, but isn't Dorothy's dress blue in the movie? During the entire time I'm watching the movie, I kept thinking to myself "Isn't her dress blue???" when obviously on the screen it was brown. About half way through the movie, someone in the projection booth starts messing with the DVR. So instead of pausing the movie, they left it running while they're going through these menues on the screen. Finally, they mute it and tell us they are fixing the color and having tech difficulties, so we all understood (there were about 150 people there). If you have satilite, you know that sometimes the screen will go black for a few seconds at a time off and on, especially in rain or really cloudy weather. Well, it also did this numerous times during the film. About 15 minutes after messing with the menu, they do it again. This time they never said anything. A british man yells out "Just let the bloody thing run!!!" so the entire theatre starts laughing, but we were very angry. Finally, they change it from 1080p down to 720p which didn't help the color at all and made the picture a bit fuzzy. After it was all over, we were some of the last people out of the theatre and as we passed by the lobby toward the exit, a very angry woman with her husband and children stopped several of us and told us we may want to wait because someone was getting us rainchecks for another movie. She said they were supossed to give them out to everyone, but didn't and the theatre was being very rude about it. So, I've got a rain check in there and I'll be using it within the next month. (you can't use them on brand new releases) I look forward to seeing more Fathom Events because they are quite entertaining, but I hope they do things better next time. Again, sorry it took me so long to inform the few of you that cared about it. |
